Profesora de Filosofía en el Hunter College y el Graduate Center, C.U.N.Y. Ha sido Presidenta de la American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division. Ha publicado cuatro libros: Rape and Resistance: Understanding the Complexities of Sexual Violation (Polity 2018); The Future of Whiteness (Polity 2015); Visible Identities: Race, Gender and the Self (Oxford 2006), que recibió el premio Frantz Fanon de 2009; y Real Knowing: New versions of the Coherence Theory (Cornell 1996). También ha editado o co-editado 11 libros, entre ellos The Routledge Companion to the Philosophy of Race, (2018) con Paul Taylor and Luvell Anderson; Feminist Epistemologies co-editado con Elizabeth Potter (Routledge, 1993); Singing in the Fire: Tales of Women in Philosophy (Rowman and Littlefield 2003); Thinking From the Underside of History co-editado con Eduardo Mendieta (Rowman & Littlefield, 2000); Identity Politics Reconsidered co-editado con Michael Hames-Garcia, Satya Mohanty y Paula Moya (Palgrave, 2006); y Constructing the Nation: A Race and Nationalism Reader co-edited with Mariana Ortega (SUNY 2009). Asimismo, ha publicado más de 100 artículos. Además de dictar clases en CUNY, ha impartido cursos en Syracuse University y en Brown, Cornell, Australian Catholic University, Aarhus University y Florida Atlantic University, y también para el Decolonial Institute en España y Sudáfrica. Ha escrito para el New York Times, Aeon, the NY Indypendent, entre otras publicaciones periódicas. En 2021, fue declarada la tercera filósofa más influyente por Academic Influence. Es originaria de Panama pero actualmente reside en Brooklyn.
